Meet Haley: Jewston's Mensch of the Month!

Carly: Who are you? Where are you from? What do you do for a living?

Haley: My name is Haley Johnson and I am from here in Houston. Currently I am in my first year of my PhD at Baylor College of Medicine!

Carly: What was your 'Jewish experience' like in college?

Haley: I attended Rhodes College, a small school in Memphis,TN, which had a very small Jewish community. As a result I had to work really hard to involve myself in Jewish life and did so however I could. By the time I graduated I was president of our Hillel and had a Jewish Studies minor. The Jewish community that I did find there, while small, grew to be one of my favorite parts of my experience.

Carly: How has living in Houston been for you?

Haley: I love it here! I chose to come back ofter college because I knew coming home was for me and do not regret that decision at all.

Carly: What has been the biggest surprise about living in Houston?

Haley: I never realized just how large this city really is. Before moving back here I rarely went outside of southwest Houston. However now I am able to venture much further and I am constantly surprised by just how far away I can get and still be in Houston.

Carly: What do you enjoy most about Jewston events?

Haley: I love getting to meet people who didn’t grew up here but are still part of the Houston community. I am the only Jew in my program so I have loved getting to meet other Jews my age in Houston who I may not have been able to connect with. In addition Jewston has allowed me to reconnect with people who I had known growing up with but had drifted away from previously.

Carly: What do you do for fun?

Haley: I am a people person at heart so I love hanging out with my friends as much as possible. Otherwise I love to read and I am a huge concert girl!
