Meet Joshua: Jewston's Mensch of the Month!

Carly: Who are you? Where are you from? What do you do for a living?

Joshua: I am a Puerto Rican venturing out into the big world outside of the island in search of fun new adventures and challenges. I work for a 3PL (Supply chain) family-owned business as a process improvement and systems manager, for our warehouses located in Houston, TX and San Juan, PR.

Carly: What was your 'Jewish experience' like in college?

Joshua: My Jewish experience through college was unfortunately a bit lackluster, celebrating only the high holidays for the most part. I was raised conservative, and it took until about my junior year in college to finally start reconnecting with the Jewish community in a more philanthropic way.

Carly: How has your time in Houston been?

Joshua: My time in Houston has been a true learning experience and as time has gone by, I have been able to pinpoint the people, places and hobbies that bring me joy and my sense of peace. Finding the Jewish communities within Houston has heavily contributed to my ability to see Houston in a brighter light and enjoy the beauty that this city has to offer.

Carly: What has been the biggest surprise about living in Houston?

Joshua: Houston’s biggest surprise to me was how many residents are not actually Houston or even Texas-born. Not being from Texas myself and having moved around the country quite a bit, it is a comforting fact to know that so many others are in the same boat of discovering the city and its people. Growing up I had always heard the United States was pegged for being a melting pot, and in my experience, Houston is the most diverse city that I have ever been able to spend time in.

Carly: What do you enjoy most about Jewston events?

Joshua: I enjoy the sense of community and the acceptance that the group has for newcomers. I joined and was immediately treated as a friend as opposed to a stranger and in every event that I have gone to I am met with open arms and smiles. It has helped bring me closer to my religion, it has helped bring me a community to feel comfortable in, and more importantly, it has given me the opportunity to meet all the wonderful people that are a part of Jewston.

Carly: What do you do for fun?

Joshua: I am a very active and outdoorsy person, Generally I’m big on hiking, surfing, skiing, and dare I say going to the gym! Life is nothing without risk so any kind of adventure and new opportunity in my path tends to be a fun one in my eyes. I am also a sucker for the daredevil stunts so I’ve done sky diving, and jumped off waterfalls and if anyone knows where I can go bungee jumping, please let me know!

Carly: Is there anything else you want the Jewston community to know?

Joshua: Whenever I get a platform that I can speak on I tell people to spread the love and positive energy, though I have not experienced anything but that in this group. In a world full of so much terror it's easier to spread hate than it is love and kindness. Thank you for accepting me and so many others exactly as we are, and I hope to continue my journey of spreading the love and positive energy alongside you all.
